Sanctioned vs. Non-Sanctioned
Sanctioned vs. Non-Sanctioned Hockey in the U.S.
Sanctioned Hockey
- Governed by USA Hockey, the official national governing body for the sport in the U.S. recognized by the IIHF and U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee.
- All players, coaches, and officials register under the same umbrella for insurance, rules enforcement, and discipline.
- USA Hockey provides standardized rules, certified officiating, safety protocols, liability coverage, and pathways to national tournaments.
Non-Sanctioned Hockey
- Operates independently of USA Hockey.
- Sets its own rules, registration process, and insurance coverage.
- Can offer more flexible scheduling, rules, and roster movement, but lacks direct access to USA Hockey national championships and may have limited cross-league play.
- Examples: Many adult leagues, some youth or tournament-only programs, and independent junior leagues such as the USPHL.
